      Biographical Information

      Steve McGee was born Stephen Arthur McGaughey to Melvin and Grace McGaughey in 1948 and was brought up in the state of Vermont.  He attended the University of Vermont, Burlington, majoring in printmaking.  Later he attended the San Francisco Art Institute majoring in photography and painting.  Steve sailed by schooner to Hawaii in 1973 and took up residence on Maui.  He painted scenes of Maui for the Village Gallery, Lahaina and Center Art Gallery, Kaanapali.  Here's Steve McGee with Anthony Quinn at Center Art Gallery.


      After a year in Normandie, France in 1989 where he lived and painted en-plen-aire oil paintings of the countryside, Mr. McGee returned to the United States.  He set up his studio in New York City and started to work with galleries.  He began and has continued an on-going series of oil paintings and watercolors depicting cityscapes of New York City which are available for purchase.  He started creating limited edition 3-D graphics in 1992 and has participated in the


      New York Art Expo at the Jacob Javits Center and around the United States for many years.  In 1996 he created a limited edition for Ford Motor Company commemorating its participation in the World Olympics in Atlanta, GA. In 1997 Mr. McGee created a special limited edition 3-D graphic for Reebok commemorating the first annual Reebok Cup soccer tournament in Chicago, IL. Steve kept a studio on Union Square in Manhattan until the end of 1997.  He currently resides in Hoboken where he keeps a studio.

Personal Information

Steve is an active member of Feast for the Eyes artists group who meet at the Pig and the Whistle in Tribeca once a month.  Many of these artists are part of a group known as "The New York Street Painters" and paint en-plen-aire regularly at various locations throughout New York City.  In addition to being a fine art painter in oils, oil pastel, and watercolors, Steve is a practicing musician and sailor.  He plays the guitar, sings and writes music in the folk/pop styles.

In the early 1970's when he lived on Maui, he was a founding member and leader of the group, Mana, which played original rock and latin styles.

With his friends Moses and Delia Moon, he helped build and operate

Modelia Studio on Maui in the early 1980's


He plays the mandolin and  is a member of Hoboken based Music Among Friends,  Music Among Friends web site.
  Steve is also a bagpipe player,

having served for a number of years as a founding member of the New York Scottish in Manhattan.  Steve and his wife are both avid road cyclists and participate in long distance cycling events around the greater Metropolitan area.  A recent fund-raiser was a ride they undertook for Washington Square United Methodist Church in Manhattan.  They raised over $3,000 on a 400 mile "Ride for Restoration" to Saratoga Springs, NY and back.    He is a USGC licensed 100 ton near coastal sea captain. Steve is a captain for New York Water Taxi on the Hudson River and has been a sailing instructor at the Newport Sailing Center,  Newport Sailing Club web site., in Jersey City, NJ.
